Bay Area's Cutest Resident Red Panda Dies, Breaking Collective Hearts

Cozy red panda

In a devastating blow to San Francisco’s animal-loving community, the SF Zoo’s beloved red panda Tenzing has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of viral videos and adorable memories.

At just 12 years old, Tenzing was more than just a cute face – he was a cultural icon who captured hearts with his playful somersaults and charming personality. Named after legendary mountain climber Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, this little furball was anything but ordinary.

A Life of Mischief and Impact

Tenzing wasn’t just another zoo animal. He was a trained performer who voluntarily participated in his own healthcare, even creating watercolor paintings that would make most millennials jealous of his artistic skills. His ability to step onto scales, enter crates, and generally be an absolute rockstar made him a fan favorite.

The Unexpected Goodbye

Recently, zoo staff noticed neurological issues affecting Tenzing’s balance – a serious concern for an animal known for its climbing abilities. After medical testing, he was diagnosed with sarcocystosis, a parasitic infection that rapidly deteriorated his condition. He peacefully passed under the care of his dedicated animal health team.

A Legacy of Conservation

As one of the approximately 10,000 red pandas remaining in the wild, Tenzing was more than just a cute face – he was an ambassador for an endangered species. The SF Zoo ensures his memory will live on through continued conservation efforts, proving that even the smallest creatures can make the biggest impact.
