Get ready to have your mind blown, Bay Area art lovers! A massive, illuminated sea serpent is about to make Golden Gate Park its new stomping ground, and trust us, this isn’t your average park installation.
A Sea Creature Like No Other
Imagine a 100-foot-long, 25-foot-high sea creature with 5,000 hand-forged iridescent scales that can light up at night. Oh, and did we mention it can blow bubbles from its nose? This isn’t some fever dream – it’s “Naga & the Captainess,” a stunning art piece originally birthed at Burning Man 2024.
From Playa Dust to Park Paradise
Created by artists Cjay Roughgarden, Stephanie Shipman, and Jaquelyn Scott, this epic installation is more than just a pretty face. Roughgarden was inspired by her childhood favorite book, “Cyrus the Unsinkable Sea Serpent,” proving that childhood dreams can totally become massive public art projects.
Community Collaboration and Cosmic Vibes
The project, which will cost around $400,000, is being brought to life by Illuminate – the same folks behind the Bay Lights and those fabulous rainbow “Gaysers” lighting up Market Street. They’re still crowdfunding the final $50,000, because epic art doesn’t just happen by itself.
Mark your calendars for July 26th (10 am to noon) for a family-friendly opening, and July 28th (7:30-9:30 pm) for a magical nighttime lighting reception. Golden Gate Park is about to get seriously transformed.
