San Francisco’s punk rock history is about to get a serious revival, and we’re here for every raucous moment.
A group of local investors, nightlife veterans, and North Beach neighbors are plotting to resurrect the iconic Mabuhay Gardens, the legendary venue that once pulsed with the raw energy of punk’s golden era. Known affectionately as the “Fab Mab,” this hallowed space hosted performances by punk legends like Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, and Black Flag - basically the Mount Rushmore of punk rock.
A Venue with Serious Street Cred
Designer and civil engineer Tom Watson is leading the charge, with a collective that’s not just hoping to reopen a venue, but to resurrect a cultural landmark. “We’re going for it; we’re not holding back,” Watson told local media, embodying the punk spirit of fearless determination.
The group is launching their comeback with a show on September 6th featuring local singer Anthony Arya, signaling the start of what could be an epic renaissance. They’ve even started a GoFundMe campaign, aiming to raise a whopping $4.5 million to acquire the building at 435-443 Broadway.
More Than Just a Music Venue
But this isn’t just about nostalgia. Watson’s vision extends beyond mere recreation. The new Mabuhay Gardens aims to be a comprehensive creative hub, complete with a recording studio, listening lounge, and record label - creating what they call “a whole circle for musicians”.
From hosting groundbreaking performances by Patti Smith and Devo to being a comedy stage for Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg, this venue has always been more than just a room with a stage. It’s been a cultural crucible where art, rebellion, and community intersect.
Stay tuned, punk rock lovers - the Fab Mab is about to make some noise again.
