Whale Hello There: Two Ocean Giants Are Cruising the California Coast Like Total Bosses

Mother Sperm Wale and her calf off Roseau

Guess what, ocean lovers? The marine world just dropped the most epic surprise party off the Dana Point coast. Two absolute unit sperm whales named Kiwi and Guava decided to make a rare appearance, turning heads and blowing minds of local marine enthusiasts.

These deep-water dwelling legends have been playing hide and seek with marine biologists, popping up off San Diego and now Orange County like maritime influencers on a coastal tour. Marine biologist Alisa Schulman-Janiger, who’s basically the whale paparazzi, is tracking these majestic creatures and their epic journey.

Ocean’s Rare Celebrities

These aren’t just any whales - we’re talking about the Beyoncés of the marine world. Sperm whales are so elusive that sometimes years go by without a single sighting. They can hold their breath for a mind-blowing 90 minutes and dive so deep they’re basically underwater ninjas hunting giant squid.

Size Matters

Let’s talk whale stats: males can grow up to a whopping 60 feet, while females cruise around at a modest 35 feet. They’re the largest toothed whales, with a blow hole that’s basically their own personal wind machine on the side of their head.

Why They’re Here

There’s a deep-water canyon just off the Southern California coastline that’s basically the whale equivalent of a trendy neighborhood. These two might just decide this is their new hangout spot, and honestly? We’re here for it.

Donna Kalez from Dana Wharf Whale Watching called the sighting “breathtaking” - and trust us, that’s an understatement. These whales are so rare that seeing them is like winning the marine lottery.
