Elon Musk Wants to Tweak Community Notes Because They're Not Playing Nice with Trump

Elon Musk is having a bit of a meltdown, folks. The tech billionaire, who’s made a name for himself as the grand poobah of free speech, has decided that his brainchild Community Notes, designed to crowdsource fact-checking on his platform X, needs a “fix”. Why? Because it simply cannot handle the truth when it contradicts the president, Donald Trump.

Originally, Community Notes was intended to zap misinformation right out of the world, drawing upon insights from a diverse user base. So, what’s changed? Apparently, Musk now believes that sneaky outside forces (read: governments and legacy media) are playing puppeteer with the system to undermine good old 'Murican values. Fancy that!

In a recent online rant, Musk lamented about Community Notes being “gamed,” specifically after posts regarding a poll that painted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a favorable light. The poll, conducted by a Ukrainian firm in cahoots with a state university, tickled Musk’s conspiracy bone because it didn’t fit his narrative. According to him, a poll showing increasing approval of Zelenskyy is downright suspicious, and it’s as if the crux of morality itself hinges on defending Trump’s perspective.

“It should be utterly obvious that a Zelenskyy-controlled poll about his OWN approval is not credible!” he tweeted in a fit of reasoning the average Twitter (sorry Elon, we are still calling it that) user can only dream of achieving.

It’s rich coming from Musk, considering he previously stood staunchly behind Community Notes, insisting they wouldn’t be prone to manipulation. He even transpired to assert that his platform would become the ultimate source of truth (🙄) as he defended Community Notes against European Union scrutiny. In fact, Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X, boasted at CES 2025 that Community Notes were “good for the world”. But fast forward just a month later, and suddenly the house burn down!

The inconsistency is palpable. Musk seems to think that when citizen consensus doesn’t align with Trump’s rhetoric, it’s a sign that the system is rigged. And here we were thinking that tweets about counting votes were supposed to be sacred. Who knew the Interwebz could be so full of surprises?

So here we are, left with yet another chapter in the never-ending saga of tech moguls wrestling with the reality of their platforms. Will Community Notes emerge more biased than ever, tailored to satisfy Musk’s fragile worldview, or can they still offer a shred of truth? Stay tuned, everyone. The Elon rollercoaster never stops.
