Pride's Party Pooper: How Corporate Cash and Gen Z's Dry Vibe Are Leaving SF Pride Broke

San Francisco Pride is facing a financial hangover that’s got nothing to do with alcohol consumption. After throwing an “epic” celebration that was more glitter than gold, the nonprofit organization is struggling to keep its rainbow lights on.

The hard truth? Corporate sponsors have ghosted faster than a Tinder date, and Gen Z’s reduced drinking habits are putting a serious dent in fundraising efforts. Suzanne Ford, executive director of SF Pride, is sounding the alarm that the organization’s future is hanging by a sequined thread.

The Money Struggles Are Real

Despite record attendance and a parade that was more fabulous than ever, SF Pride fell short of its $2.3 million fundraising goal by a whopping $180,000. “I don’t know if people understand how fragile it is,” Ford admitted, her voice probably as worn out as her fundraising strategies.

A Changing Landscape

The LGBTQ+ community is facing unprecedented challenges with state and federal governments attacking their rights, while simultaneously, the traditional funding model for Pride events is crumbling. Corporate sponsors are backing away, and younger generations are more interested in activism than alcohol sales.

The Path Forward

Ford isn’t giving up. She’s planning to hustle harder than a drag queen on a Saturday night, scheduling meetings with businesses, foundations, and nonprofits to “keep telling the story” of Pride’s importance. Her message is clear: support Pride, or risk losing this crucial celebration of visibility and resistance.

“If you saw the value this year, then we’re going to need your help,” Ford emphasized. “There’s a level of urgency”. And honey, in San Francisco, we know all about urgency.
