From Corn Catastrophe to Broadway Gold: The Musical That Refused to Die

Cornography

When life hands you a musical that bombs harder than a corn crop with blight, sometimes you just gotta shake it off and start again.

The Seeds of Success

What happens when three creative geniuses refuse to let a theatrical flop define their artistic journey? In the case of Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally, and Robert Horn, the answer is simple: you reimagine, rewrite, and revolutionize.

Their original musical “Moonshine: That Hee Haw Musical” premiered in Dallas back in 2015 and landed with all the grace of a drunk cornstalk. Critics were lukewarm, hopes were dashed, and it seemed like curtains for the project.

From Moonshine to Broadway Shine

Fast forward to 2023, and “Shucked” - the transformed musical - not only survived but thrived, snagging nine Tony Award nominations. The show follows the hilarious inhabitants of Cob County, a place where corn, God, and moonshine reign supreme. When their precious corn crop starts dying, the town’s quirky residents embark on a wild journey filled with ridiculous solutions and unexpected love stories.

The Power of Persistence

“We needed every one of those years to get the show to where it is,” Clark admitted. What started as a disappointment became a testament to artistic persistence, proving that sometimes your first draft isn’t your final masterpiece.

Now touring across North America, “Shucked” is living proof that with collaboration, creativity, and a whole lot of corn-based humor, anything is possible.
