San Francisco just leveled up its queer representation game, and honey, it’s fabulous. Per Sia, a trans woman drag performer and afterschool arts program teacher, has been officially crowned as the city’s new Drag Laureate, taking over the sequin-studded throne from D’Arcy Drollinger.
This isn’t just another municipal appointment - it’s a bold statement of resilience and pride. Per Sia, known for her electrifying performances at Outside Lands and viral internet fame, brings serious credentials to the role. Her viral 2013 video “Google Google Apps Apps” might have been pulled from YouTube, but her impact is undeniable.
Breaking Barriers, One Drag Performance at a Time
During her inauguration at Rooftop Elementary School, Per Sia didn’t mince words. “Our existence is being debated and targeted by people who don’t know us,” she declared, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community. Her appointment feels like a powerful middle finger to conservative protesters who’ve tried to disrupt her performances.
What’s a Drag Laureate Actually Do?
Expect to see Per Sia living her best public life - throwing first pitches at Giants games, hyping up Warriors crowds, and commanding the SF Pride stage. She’ll represent San Francisco’s fabulous queer culture for the next three years, proving once again why our city remains a beacon of progressive awesomeness.
So here’s to Per Sia - may her reign be as fierce, fabulous, and unapologetic as San Francisco itself!
