Sweet Goodbye: How Crime Pushed This Beloved SF Candy Shop Out of Hayes Valley

Blue Bottle Coffee in Hayes Valley

Hayes Valley just lost a sugary gem, and the reason might not be what you think. Miette, the adorable patisserie that’s been serving up French macarons and picture-perfect sweets for nearly two decades, is packing up its candy jars and moving to Pacific Heights.

Owner Meg Ray isn’t mincing words about why she’s saying farewell to her beloved Octavia Street location. The charming shop has been battling a perfect storm of urban challenges: plummeting foot traffic, relentless shoplifting, and what she describes as a “tremendous uptick in drug use” right outside her door.

A Neighborhood in Transition

The move isn’t just about Miette’s struggles. It’s a snapshot of San Francisco’s ongoing urban transformation. Hayes Valley, once considered a pristine shopping destination, has been wrestling with increasing visibility of homelessness and drug activity. Illegal encampment fires and migrating drug users have turned what was once a sanitized neighborhood into a complex urban landscape.

From Dollhouse to New Digs

Miette’s new home at 2252 Fillmore Street promises to retain its whimsical charm. The flagship store will still feature those trademark glass apothecary jars filled with cookies, macarons, and a jaw-dropping 100 bins of Swedish Pick-n-Mix. It’s also landing in the middle of a neighborhood revitalization project led by local billionaire Neil Mehta, who’s been buying up properties along the Upper Fillmore corridor.

More Than Just a Move

While the shop is maintaining its five-location presence, the closure of its original Hayes Valley spot feels deeply personal for Ray. “A lot of love went into that store,” she told local media, her wistfulness palpable. This isn’t just a business relocation; it’s the end of an era for a beloved neighborhood institution.
