Union Street Getting a Boozy Upgrade: Cheers to New Entertainment Zones!

The Union Street Festival is gearing up to be the party of the year, thanks to District 2 Supervisor Stephen Sherrill. In his glorious quest less than two months into his term, he’s proposed turning Union Street into another boozy “entertainment zone”. So, hold onto your cocktail cups, folks!
Sherrill, in cahoots with D3 Supervisor Danny Sauter, is pushing this plan that would say “bye-bye” to your sober self during special events when the streets go car-free. As if the city didn’t have enough wine-sipping opportunities, here comes this idea to let bars and restaurants unleash to-go cocktails. Who knew legislation could sound so fun?!
His grand vision centers around the annual Union Street Festival, where this new zone would turn thirsty patrons into happy customers wandering around with their open drinks. Sherrill declares this a symbol of hope for our cherished dining spots, particularly after a tough pandemic for restaurants. Supporting small businesses and offering a chance for patrons to sip on cocktails while socializing? Now that is a combination we can toast to!
“I just introduced legislation to create an Entertainment Zone, bringing more energy, more foot traffic, and more support for our incredible restaurants and bars,” Sherrill tweeted. Sounds like he’s really aiming to make Union Street a nightlife hotspot! Clearly, an inspiration our city should see more of.
We’ve been seeing a wave of these open-container zones popping up faster than you can say “margarita”. The first one hit Front Street for Oktoberfest, and we all know how much that sparked joy for beer lovers everywhere. And now, it seems the trend is being embraced wide and far, benefiting other neighborhoods like Cole Valley and Chase Center. Can someone get me a drink already?
The actual exact boundaries for Union Street’s entertainment zone are still a mystery. Sherrill hinted at further developments beyond just Union Street, which could mean more festive places to drink and be merry. As if this city’s cocktail scene wasn’t already thriving enough!
As this year’s festival is set for the weekend after Memorial Day, let’s cross our fingers that this proposal passes in time for us to raise our glasses in the street. Because what’s better than sipping in style while soaking up summer vibes and supporting our local businesses? Cheers to that!
