Climate catastrophe just got a major upgrade, folks. In what might be the most frustrating diplomatic disaster of 2025, global leaders have spectacularly bungled another chance to save our planet from drowning in plastic waste.

The Plastic Apocalypse Continues

The United Nations climate talks in Geneva have officially collapsed, leaving environmentalists, activists, and basically anyone who breathes air totally demoralized. After 11 grueling days of negotiations, representatives from 184 countries couldn’t agree on a single meaningful strategy to curb plastic production.

Who’s to Blame?

Unsurprisingly, oil-producing countries like the United States and Saudi Arabia torpedoed any meaningful attempts to limit plastic production. Their brilliant strategy? Continue pumping out over 400 million tons of plastic annually, because why solve a problem when you can make money, right?

A Glimmer of Hope?

Despite the soul-crushing outcome, some delegates are trying to maintain optimism. The UN Environment Programme’s executive director, Inger Andersen, claimed “significant progress” was made - which sounds suspiciously like corporate speak for “we totally failed”.

The harsh reality? We’re on track to increase plastic production by 70% by 2040 unless drastic policy changes happen. Indigenous leaders, youth activists, and environmental groups watched in dismay as their pleas for action were effectively ignored.

As Graham Forbes from Greenpeace bluntly put it: “We are going in circles. We cannot continue to do the same thing and expect a different result”.

So buckle up, climate warriors - the plastic apocalypse is just getting started.
