California Counties Are Ghosting ICE Detention Center Inspections and We're Not Here For It

Immigration detention centers in California are running wild with zero accountability, and local counties are basically looking the other way. Despite a 2024 law that gives county health officials the power to inspect these privately-run facilities, most are doing absolutely nothing.

The Shocking Lack of Oversight

Let’s break this down: California has seven immigration detention centers, and only San Bernardino County has done anything remotely resembling an inspection - and that was just a quick food service check. Other counties like Imperial and San Diego are just “exploring” their options, which is bureaucratic speak for “we’re doing jack squat”.

Detainees Are Suffering

Meanwhile, people inside these facilities are experiencing horrific conditions. Detainees report not receiving medications, experiencing overcrowding, and facing potential health risks. At the Adelanto facility, one detainee even died after staff allegedly delayed critical medical care.

Political Roadblocks

The state tried to ban for-profit detention centers, but courts struck down that effort. Now, Attorney General Rob Bonta admits there are serious limitations on what California can actually do to protect detained individuals. Federal authority trumps state power, leaving immigrants in a dangerous limbo.

The bottom line? These detention centers are operating like lawless zones, and local counties are choosing comfortable ignorance over human rights. Talk about a systemic failure.
