Herstory in Action: Why We're Celebrating Women's Military History Week!

PA Women Veterans Symposium

March 17-23 is no ordinary week, folks! It’s Women’s Military History Week, a time to shine a spotlight on the fearless women who have smashed barriers and served bravely throughout our nation’s history. From the Revolutionary War to today, these ladies have donned their uniforms and shown that courage doesn’t have a gender.

In the dog-eat-dog world of military service, women have long been taking names and kicking butt, even when they weren’t allowed to officially serve. Remember World War II? Enter the Women’s Army Corps, along with the groundbreaking 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion – an all-woman, all-Black unit that ensured our brave troops got their letters. Talk about multitasking!

Forget the history books that skim over women’s contributions; they belong on every page. This week is a reminder that women have been pivotal in changing the military landscape. Thanks to the grit and determination of these trailblazers, women can now serve in all capacities, including combat roles. You go, girls!

Let’s not forget about the incredible women serving today. U.S. Army Sergeant Sagen Maddalena snagged a silver medal in the 2024 Summer Olympics, while Captain Sage Fox made headlines as the first openly transgender soldier. Their contributions, along with those of countless other women, deserve all the fanfare we can muster.

As we honor the resilience and dedication of these extraordinary women, it becomes painfully clear why it’s essential to recognize their achievements. In a world where elements of military history are facing erasure, we utilize this week to amplify the voices and stories that matter. Diversity strengthens our military and, let’s be real, our society as a whole.

Governor Gavin Newsom officially dubbed this week “Women’s Military History Week,” and you better believe we’re here for it! From active-duty servicemembers to veterans, let’s give a round of applause to the women who have bravely put their lives on the line. This week isn’t just a page in the calendar; it’s a powerful reminder that history is made up of every one of us, irrespective of our gender.

So raise a toast (or a vegan smoothie) to the women who’ve shaped our military history and continue to inspire future generations! Celebrate, share, and keep the conversation going, because these stories of courage and pride deserve to echo through time.
