Summer Hunger? Not On Newsom's Watch: How California Is Keeping Kids Fed

Summer break used to mean freedom, fun, and… potential food insecurity for thousands of California kids. But Governor Gavin Newsom is dropping a radical solution that’s about to change the game for families across the Golden State.
Food Justice for the Win
California’s SUN Bucks program is back for round two, and it’s bringing serious relief. Starting in June 2025, over 4 million children will automatically receive $120 in food benefits via EBT card - that’s $40 per month for June, July, and August. Translation? No kid goes hungry just because school’s out.
Who Gets the Goods?
If your kiddo qualifies for free or reduced-price school meals, receives CalFresh, or is in foster care, they’re likely already enrolled. For everyone else, there’s a simple application process through their school by September 1st. Pro tip: Don’t sleep on this opportunity.
Beyond the Dollars and Cents
This isn’t just about feeding kids - it’s about dignity, community support, and ensuring every child has the nutrition they need to grow and thrive. California continues to lead the nation in progressive policies that actually make a difference in people’s lives. Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom aren’t just talking the talk; they’re walking the walk.
