University of California Workers Demand Fair Pay and Healthcare: A Labor Revolt Brewing

Representing over 60,000 workers from various campuses, unions UPTE-CWA Local 9119 and AFSCME Local 3299 are calling out the UC system for what they see as blatant disrespect and unfair labor practices.
The Salary and Healthcare Squeeze
At the heart of this rebellion? Wage negotiations and skyrocketing healthcare costs. While UC claims to offer wage increases, union leaders are crying foul over “piecemeal bargaining” that threatens to divide workers into different pay categories.
A Staffing Crisis Brewing
The unions aren’t just fighting for better pay – they’re highlighting a critical staffing shortage. With a third of workers voluntarily leaving their jobs in recent years, UC is facing a talent exodus that could seriously impact educational and medical services.
The Healthcare Dilemma
Health insurance premiums are the other explosive issue. UC wants to implement a tiered system that could potentially increase costs for workers, a move that feels like adding insult to injury for employees already struggling with Bay Area’s astronomical living expenses.
“The fact is, you’re never going to get a resolution to these issues unless you have two parties willing to come to the bargaining table in good faith,” says union spokesperson Todd Stenhouse – and we couldn’t agree more.
