NNSA Layoffs: When 'Efficiency' Means Firing Nuclear Experts (Then Begging Them to Come Back)

In yet another episode of “Government Efficiency Gone Wild”, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) managed to lay off hundreds of employees at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), you know, the folks who literally oversee America’s nuclear arsenal. And then, realizing that gutting the workforce responsible for our nukes might be a tiny bit reckless, they frantically reversed course.
Oops, We Fired the Wrong People
DOGE, led by Elon Musk and his pre-puberty software engineer minions, decided it was time to trim some government “fat”. But instead of tackling actual bureaucracy bloat, they swung the axe straight at 350 highly skilled nuclear security experts, because nothing screams “efficiency” like firing the people who keep our most dangerous weapons in check. The reason? A blanket order to cut costs across federal agencies, without bothering to check what or who was being slashed.
Mission Abort: The Panicked Walk-Back
Once someone in the administration (probably a horrified national security advisor) realized the gravity of what just happened, DOGE hit the panic button. The firings were swiftly reversed, and NNSA Director Teresa Robbins issued a memo reinstating most of the laid-off employees, except for 28 poor souls who apparently didn’t make the cut in this nuclear Hunger Games.
But by then, the damage was done. Morale? In the gutter. Trust in DOGE’s decision-making? Nonexistent. Security risks? Skyrocketing.
DOGE’s Greatest Hits: Another Day, Another Disaster
If this was DOGE’s first major screw-up, maybe we’d cut them some slack. But let’s not forget their recent other mishaps, from chaotic policy rollouts to bungling inter-agency coordination. (And don’t even get us started on the time they accidentally exposed sensitive government databases to literally anyone with an internet connection.) At this point, their motto might as well be: “We make things worse, so you don’t have to”.
A Reminder That Incompetence Has Consequences
While the administration is now scrambling to pretend this whole thing never happened, the reality is clear: decisions made without foresight can have catastrophic consequences. The NNSA layoffs were more than just a bureaucratic blunder, they were a national security risk.
Maybe next time DOGE wants to show off its “efficiency,” it can start with something a little less apocalyptic, like, say, cutting down on redundant paperwork instead of firing the people making sure our nuclear weapons don’t become a real-life action movie plot.
