Mac Jones Joins the 49ers: A Four-Year Wait and a Lot of Drama

Mac Jones has officially signed on with the 49ers, just as we all knew he would, back in 2021, that is. It only took a whirlwind of drafts, trades, and a fair share of quarterback drama for it to finally happen. Welcome to the team, Mac!
On Wednesday, word got out that Jones agreed to a two-year contract worth $7 million, with $5 million fully guaranteed, maybe just enough to buy a starter pack of avocado toasts for his new digs in Santa Clara. The deal could hit up to $11.5 million with some incentives, so let’s hope he doesn’t drop the ball on that!
Let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane. Back in 2021, when the anticipation was thick enough to spread on a bagel, the 49ers traded up to the No. 3 spot in the draft. People, okay, analysts, friends, your great-aunt Marge, were convinced that Jones was destined to don the 49ers jersey. But what did the 49ers do instead? They picked Trey Lance. Shocker!
Fast forward a couple of years, and here we are: Lance is benched, Jimmy Garoppolo is out, and Brock Purdy has emerged like the underdog hero out of a Netflix special. With Purdy firmly in the driver’s seat, Kyle Shanahan decided that getting Jones to step in as backup was the right call all along.
Let’s not forget, Shanahan was a major fan of Jones back when he had more options than he knew what to do with. “There were two that I really wanted: Mac Jones and Trey,” Shanahan spilled on the ‘I Am Athlete’ podcast. In a fantasy league gone wrong, the 49ers chose running potential over passing accuracy, and as thrilling as that sounds, it didn’t quite pan out.
Now, Purdy’s securing his spot as the starter, no pressure, right? And with the new contract signed, Jones is now a part of the equation, finding his way into the spotlight, but this time as someone who’s not supposed to be the guy.
It’s a full-circle moment for both Jones and the Niners. One can only hope Bay Area traffic is kinder to him now than it was back in 2021 when we all thought he was about to make his grand entrance to the team.
In the circus that is the NFL, this move is surely more than just players changing jerseys. It’s about dodging the potholes of past decisions and trying to steer towards a revitalized future, if the 49ers can figure out who their real starter is and stick with them.
So here’s to Mac Jones: may your pass completions be high and your interceptions low. Welcome to the Bay, where even a football career can take longer to get a parking spot on a Sunday than you’d think!
