San Francisco Hits the Streets: No Encore for Trump’s Second Inauguration

In a dramatic prelude to Donald Trump’s second inauguration, the streets of the Mission District in San Francisco echoed with the chants of protestors this past Saturday. Over 1,000 folks showed up to kick off a weekend of resistance—not just in the Bay but in towns across the nation. The message? A resounding ‘No to Trump’ as the winds of fascism begin to swirl once more.

If anything, the mood felt more resigned than defiant. As Susan Weyl noted, while today’s crowd may have been impressive, it didn’t quite match the sea of bodies we saw back in 2016. “Last time, the BART train was full,” she said, lamenting the gradual wearing down of spirits. Quite the optimistic start to a weekend geared toward making noise, eh?

The march, officially dubbed the “People’s March” (previously recognized as the Women’s March before it got a rebranding, you know, like all the best products), strutted its way from 24th Street down Mission and culminated at Dolores Park. Frankly, it felt like hipsters united with a purpose—an impressive turnout considering the collective apathy that has set in after years of political turbulence.

“No human being is illegal!” shouted City Attorney David Chiu, emphasizing some of the core issues at play: immigration, climate change, and perhaps a bit of justice while we’re at it. Seems like a good time to remind everyone that just because they want to strip rights doesn’t mean we’ll stay silent.

But of course, the protests came with a side of irony. A faction of anti-trans activists curiously found their way into Dolores Park to combat the protesters—because nothing says “standing up for women’s rights” like undermining the rights of an entire group of people. Good luck explaining that one.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere wasn’t that great back in D.C. – it turns out, cold weather isn’t the best motivator for mass gatherings. Even so, about 50,000 braved the chill to declare their refusal to watch history repeat itself. If only the weather could keep the corrupt politicians away, am I right?

Before we wrap this up, let’s not forget: a No to Trump rally is set for Sunday in San Francisco, kicking off from Civic Center and taking to Market Street. The SFMTA is kindly warning about some potential bus delays—as if you’re not used to those by now.

So put down your avocado toast, grab your protest signs, and let’s hope for a weekend filled with activism that doesn’t fade into the ether like a poorly executed latte art. Because despite the odds, we will not stand by quietly.
