Surprise, surprise! The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has decided to put on their detective hats and investigate Bay FC following reports of a “toxic” work environment. Who knew that a soccer team could have issues beyond just getting on the field?

According to a juicy report from the San Francisco Chronicle, at least two complaints about the team were filed under coach Albertin Montoya. Two former players, who decided to stay anonymous (probably for their own sanity), compared the situation at Bay FC to that of a soap opera with endless drama. Thank you, but we like our reality without the toxic side plots.

The coach might have a loving relationship with some of his players, but with complaints flying around like confetti, it’s hard to ignore the dark cloud looming over the club. Emily Menges summed it up beautifully, saying the situation was “a distraction”. I mean, who needs a peaceful work environment when you can have a reality show to complain about, right?

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman assured everyone that they’re on top of things. An independent third party is now in the mix, trying to untangle this whole mess. Hot tip: the investigation won’t have a speedy timeline , this isn’t a two-week reality TV challenge. But take heart, Berman stated that the league is all about healthy environments, which totally sounds like what all organizations say when they have to clean up their mess.

Let’s not forget that this isn’t the first time Bay FC has faced scrutiny. In February, Graeme Abel, the head of domestic scouting, bailed after less than a week, thanks to allegations of verbal abuse from his time at the University of Oregon. This makes you wonder if there’s something in the water over at Bay FC or if they just specialize in questionable hires.

In a world already riddled with serious issues, the soccer realm isn’t immune to the chaos of poor workplace cultures. Here’s hoping Bay FC can figure this out and turn their ship around , or at least make it a little less dramatic.

In the meantime, remember this: if the coaches don’t care about building a safe environment, it’s time to kick their butts out of the league. No player should have to endure such nonsense. Let’s get it together, Bay FC!
