San Francisco’s theater world just got rocked by a major scandal that’s giving serious “To Catch a Predator” vibes. Nick Olivero, co-founder of Boxcar Theatre, has resigned after a social media vigilante group posted a video alleging he attempted to meet up with a minor for sexual purposes.
The drama unfolded on social media when a group called People v. Preds shared a video purportedly showing Olivero being confronted in a San Diego parking lot. The group’s founder, who goes by Tim Johnson, claims to pose as a 14-year-old on dating apps to expose potential predators.
A History of Controversy
This isn’t the first time Olivero has faced professional scrutiny. Earlier in 2024, performers from his immersive theater production “The Speakeasy” raised allegations of workplace misconduct, including claims of inappropriate audience interactions and unsafe working environments.
The Aftermath
Boxcar Theatre’s board quickly responded, with Managing Director Stefani Pelletier and Executive Producer Laura Drake Chambers stepping in as co-executive directors. The theater’s statement emphasized they were “shocked and appalled” by the allegations.
Legal experts note that vigilante-captured evidence can be challenging to prosecute, and the group’s methods raise serious questions about entrapment and due process. As of now, it remains unclear whether criminal charges will be filed.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for accountability and safety in creative spaces, especially those that involve close interpersonal interactions.
