When life throws you curveballs, sometimes you’ve gotta pivot – and the 49ers radio broadcast team is doing just that. With legendary announcer Greg Papa stepping back to battle cancer, a talented squad of young broadcasters is stepping up to keep fans connected to the game.
A Broadcaster’s Journey
Guy Haberman, a 39-year-old sports broadcasting veteran, is leading the charge. Born to an Air Force family and raised bouncing between states, Haberman’s love for sports commentary started early. From wearing Jose Canseco jerseys in Omaha to calling high school football games in Davis, his path to the 49ers booth feels like destiny.
The New Generation
Joining Haberman is Jack Smith, a 22-year-old broadcasting prodigy who recently won the Jim Nantz Award. Fresh out of USC and with a summer internship at the Washington Nationals under his belt, Smith represents the bright future of sports broadcasting.
Honoring a Legacy
While the team is excited about this opportunity, they’re acutely aware of the big shoes they’re filling. Smith says it best: “I’m just trying to do a good job. The fans deserve that, the Niners deserve that, and Papa deserves that”.
With a rotating cast of broadcasters including Carlos Ramírez, Troy Clardy, and Justin Allegri, the 49ers are ensuring fans won’t miss a beat of the action. Color analyst Tim Ryan’s motto? “If it’s not fun, I don’t want to do it” – and fun is exactly what this team promises to deliver.
