President Trump has just gifted us with another baffling headline, an executive order aimed at banning transgender athletes from competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams. Taking a page out of the ‘Men’s Rights Playbook’, the order insists that schools can’t overlook “fundamental biological truths”. Apparently, biology textbooks might need a rewrite because it looks like a lot of people missed the memo on gender fluidity.

This latest move has thrown San Jose State University’s women’s volleyball team into a spotlight it probably didn’t ask for. Remember the drama last year? Their team captain, Brooke Slusser, made headlines when she launched a lawsuit against the university over a transgender teammate’s inclusion on the court. Why? Slusser claimed her fellow player’s spike reached a dizzying 80 miles per hour, apparently a speed that would put us all at risk of a concussion just watching.

Some teams even opted to forfeit games against the Spartans as a protest, cementing SJSU’s position at the center of a heated national debate. Meanwhile, Alyssa Sugai, a former player who left the team after this controversy, described her struggles with depression as her dreams unraveled due to someone else’s inclusion. That’s right, folks, someone’s livelihood and mental health was cast to the side in this political chess match.

On the White House front, the administration is all about enforcing this executive order. A spokesperson declared that “schools must align with the rules,” leaving many to wonder if SJSU can maintain its commitment to student well-being while juggling Trump’s latest authoritarian whim.

According to Trump, allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports is “demeaning and unfair”. Clint Eastwood might’ve said it best: “A man’s got to know his limitations”, and apparently, the former president believes those limitations should be enforced with the heavy hand of the government.

NCAA President Charlie Baker echoed Trump’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for uniform guidelines that cater to the current crop of athletes rather than creating a patchwork of regulations that pit them against one another.

So where does this leave the SJSU women’s volleyball team? Caught in the crossfire of a culture war, it seems. We’re left with one question: when will we finally realize that sports should be about inclusivity and fairness for everyone, rather than the latest scheme to weaponize sports against marginalized communities? Stay tuned, folks, it’s bound to get wilder from here.
