In the ever-evolving digital playground of online gaming, Roblox is taking a bold step towards keeping its young users safe with a controversial new age verification system that’s part sci-fi, part digital surveillance.

The platform is rolling out an AI-powered age verification feature that requires teens to submit video selfies for “age estimation” - because apparently, nothing says “safe online experience” like having an algorithm judge your pubescent looks. Users between 13-17 can now create “Trusted Connections,” a tiered friend system designed to give teenagers more controlled social interactions.

The Selfie Screening Process

Here’s how it works: submit a video selfie, and an AI will analyze your face to determine your age. Look too young? Automatic restrictions. Can’t be conclusively aged? You’ll need to whip out a government ID - because every 13-year-old totally has one of those lying around.

Privacy Concerns and Predator Prevention

While Roblox claims these measures are about creating a “safe by default” environment, online safety experts are skeptical. Kirra Pendergast from Safe on Social argues that these features put too much responsibility on minors themselves, essentially asking kids to manage their own digital safety.

The Bigger Picture

With over 98 million users worldwide and a significant teen demographic, Roblox is attempting to address serious issues like online predation. Previous reports have highlighted disturbing instances of grooming and exploitation on the platform, making these new safety measures more than just a PR stunt.

As tech continues to evolve, so do the strategies for protecting young users - though whether AI selfie screenings are the silver bullet remains to be seen.
