San Francisco’s own comedy queen, Ali Wong, has made a splash recently by bringing her boyfriend, the hilariously talented Bill Hader, to the new Turtle Tower. And if you thought your PHO-loving heart couldn’t handle more excitement, think again!
Located at 220 California Street, where you used to fill your Instagram with pics of Barbacco, Turtle Tower is as much of a treasure as ever, serving up their legendary chicken pho. Even amidst a soft opening, the restaurant is already proving to be a favorite for celebs. Wong, who’s no stranger to the deliciousness they serve, made her triumphant return to the spot she once hailed in a 2019 Chronicle interview, alongside her go-to haunts Saigon Sandwich and Taqueria Cancun.
This isn’t just any visit, folks. It’s a love story unfolding over steaming bowls of broth! Wong, who is of Chinese-Vietnamese descent, self-described as “half fancy Asian and half jungle Asian”, knows quality when she tastes it. After her recent split from her ex-husband, Justin Hakuta, dating Hader seems to have spiced things up quite nicely. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to slurp noodles next to the guy from Barry? Talk about a date night food combo!
The Turtle Tower gang took to Instagram to express their gratitude, saying, “We’re thrilled to be back in San Francisco and so grateful for all the love and support. A huge thank you to @aliwong and @billfreakinghader for stopping by our small business, it truly means the world to us”. A heartfelt thank you from a local biz? How wholesome!
During Wong’s stay in town for her latest stand-up set, aptly dubbed “Work in Progress,” she was at the Punch Line from March 17-19. Bay Area stand-up and delicious pho? Yes, please!
But hold your horses, because the dining experience isn’t all bliss just yet. Turtle Tower is still only serving lunch from 11 AM to 3 PM seven days a week, and the liquor license is still pending for dinner service. Can someone get a move on for the love of pho and all that is divine?
Whether you swoon over Wong and Hader’s blossoming romance or just want to get your noodles fix on, this power couple’s pho date is just the kind of love story we need right now. So what are you waiting for? Let’s make a beeline for Turtle Tower and live our best lives!
