Bay Area Peeps, Say Goodbye to Ear-Splitting Netflix Ads!

Watching Netflix on a TV at home

We’ve all been there: you’re cozied up on the couch, binge-watching your favorite show, and suddenly a car commercial blasts through your speakers like a foghorn at Fleet Week. Well, our homeboy Governor Gavin Newsom just dropped the mic on those ear-splitting streaming ads.

Parents, This One’s for You

State Senator Tom Umberg crafted this genius bill after his own legislative director experienced the ultimate parental nightmare: a loud ad waking up a finally sleeping baby. Talk about relatable content! SB 576 is basically a love letter to exhausted parents everywhere, ensuring streaming platforms keep their volume in check.

Tech vs. Tranquility

The entertainment industry tried to push back, arguing that streaming services can’t control ad volumes like traditional broadcasters. But let’s be real - if Silicon Valley can build self-driving cars, they can probably figure out how to keep commercials from sounding like a jet engine.

The Bigger Picture

This law essentially extends a federal regulation from 2010 that makes TV and cable ads play nice with show volumes. California’s doing what Congress couldn’t: protecting our eardrums and our sanity, one streaming session at a time. Now excuse us while we celebrate with some blissfully quiet Netflix and chill.
