Game On! Your Fave Classics Battle for the Video Game Hall of Fame

World Video Game Hall of Fame at The Strong National Museum of Play

Gaming nostalgia has officially entered the chat. This year, a lineup of 12 video game titans is vying for a spot in the World Video Game Hall of Fame, and they’re not messing around. From pixelated classics to mobile giants, the hall’s latest contenders have made legendary marks on our gaming lives and pop culture.

Eligible to capture votes from the gaming masses are classics like Age of Empires and Frogger, alongside the mobile sensation known as Angry Birds. These games cover quite the timeline: we’ve got the 1977 handheld Mattel Football (because who doesn’t want to relive their 80s childhood?) and the massively popular Tamagotchi, whose virtual pet babies you likely raised in between class periods.

As an homage to their infinite clutch plays, voters just need to sprinkle some love on their favorites by March 13. The winners of this love fest will be immortalized at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester on May 8. Spoiler alert: if you’re not participating, are you even a gamer?

This list reads like a rogue’s gallery of gaming history, including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the game that transformed shooting games into Hollywood blockbusters, and NBA 2K, which gave us all a simulacrum of our pro baller dreams. And let’s not forget Quake, the unapologetic flag-bearer of the esports revolution.

Jon-Paul C. Dyson, the director of The Strong’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games, has some spicy thoughts about these nominees: “All of these games have enormously influenced pop culture or the game industry itself”. And honestly, he’s right. Without these classics, our Twitch streams would be as dull as some of the blockbuster movies released last summer.

So whether your heart beats for Golden Eye’s espionage action or the digital farming world of Harvest Moon, get out there and let your voice be heard! This is your moment to show the world what gaming really means to you, or at least create a text chain to plot your favorite doppelgängers for the win. Remember, it’s not just about the glory; it’s about how many TikToks you can create along the way.
