Rugby isn’t just a sport for the heteronormative crowd anymore, and The San Francisco Fog is here to prove it.

This Bay Area queer rugby team isn’t just playing a game - they’re dismantling stereotypes with every tackle and try. Founded in 2000, The Fog has been challenging perceptions of what it means to be an athlete in the LGBTQ+ community.

Breaking Barriers on the Pitch

Head coach Dany Samreth has been leading the charge since 2014, embodying a vision that celebrates queerness and athletic excellence simultaneously. “It can help someone discover a piece of themselves that is aggressive, that is active,” Samreth explains, challenging the notion that being feminine and being a fierce athlete are mutually exclusive.

A Family Beyond the Field

What makes The Fog unique isn’t just their athletic prowess, but their commitment to creating a supportive community. With practices twice a week and a free “Pathway to Rugby” program, they’re welcoming queer athletes who might have previously felt excluded from sports.

Victories Beyond Trophies

Their recent gold at the 2025 North America Cup isn’t just a sporting achievement - it’s a statement. Despite facing discrimination and teams refusing to play against them, The Fog continues to kick ass and change minds, proving that queer athletes are a force to be reckoned with.

As Samreth proudly declares, “For all of us at The Fog, this is a family. A big sporting family!”
