Sam Smith's Smokin' Hot Castro Video Has Queer Community Lighting Up Social Media

"Queer & Proud" - Pride parade in Geneva (Switzerland), July 2019.

In the latest Bay Area drama that’s got everyone talking, pop sensation Sam Smith has unintentionally sparked a heated debate about smoking representation in queer media.

The music video for Smith’s cover of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” - shot in the iconic Castro neighborhood - has some locals clutching their pearls and wagging fingers at the cigarette-wielding performers.

Smoke Signals from the Castro

Napa-based DJ Rob Doughty didn’t hold back, calling out the “shocking & disturbing” number of cigarettes in the video. His primary concern? The long history of tobacco companies targeting LGBTQ+ communities with aggressive marketing tactics.

A Nostalgic Nod or Problematic Portrayal?

While Smith isn’t personally seen smoking, they’ve been open about battling tobacco addiction in the past. The music video captures a retro Castro vibe, featuring a diverse group of queer folks hanging out and vibing to the soulful track.

Queer Community Responds

Interestingly, YouTube comments seem more focused on Smith’s beautiful rendition of the song, with one cheeky viewer asking if everyone’s smoking “because it looks good in slow motion?”

Smith, who’s set to inaugurate the newly renovated Castro Theatre in February, expressed their love for San Francisco and the neighborhood’s rich queer history. “I LOVE San Francisco and The Castro especially has been so central to the Queer community here over the years,” they shared.

Whether you’re Team Anti-Smoking or Team Artistic Expression, one thing’s clear: Sam Smith knows how to create conversation.
