Trump Pulls the Plug on LGBTQ Suicide Hotline, But California Swoops in Like the Hero We Deserve

LGBTIQA+ rights activists protest queer conversion practices/therapy. Perth.

In a world where political pettiness can literally cost lives, California is proving once again why it’s the progressive powerhouse of the nation.

The Trump administration just dropped a bombshell that would make even the most hardened bureaucrat cringe: cutting specialized suicide prevention support for LGBTQ youth through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. But hold onto your rainbow flags, because Governor Gavin Newsom isn’t about to let this slide.

A Lifeline Under Threat

The numbers are gut-wrenching. The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ young people in the United States seriously consider suicide each year, with at least one attempting suicide every 45 seconds. And now, the federal government wants to remove a critical support system? Not on California’s watch.

California Fights Back

While the federal government turns its back, California is stepping up with a massive $4.7 billion Master Plan for Kids’ Mental Health. The state is maintaining partnerships with organizations like the Trevor Project to ensure LGBTQ youth have access to the support they desperately need.

Resources at Your Fingertips

California has 12 crisis centers with trained counselors ready to respond to 988 calls, chats, and texts. Additionally, CalHOPE offers digital mental health support for youth, young adults, and families, providing a compassionate warm line for those struggling.

In Newsom’s own words: “Cutting off a proven lifeline for people in need is outrageous and inexcusable. While this federal administration slashes services and tries to erase LGBTQ people, California will do the opposite. Every child , straight, gay, transgender , belongs”.
