The Oakland sports community is reeling from a devastating loss that cuts deep into the city’s soul.

Legendary football coach John Beam, a towering figure in Oakland’s athletic landscape, was brutally murdered on the Laney College campus, leaving behind a legacy of mentorship and transformation that spanned over four remarkable decades.

A Life of Inspiration

Beam wasn’t just a coach – he was a lifeline for countless young athletes. With an incredible 160-33-3 record at Skyline High School and a community college national championship under his belt, he guided students from troubled backgrounds toward brighter futures. His impact was so profound that Netflix even featured him in the docuseries “Last Chance U”, showcasing his ability to transform lives through sports.

A Targeted Tragedy

The shooting, described by Oakland Police as a “targeted incident”, resulted in the arrest of 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr. Shockingly, Irving had a connection to Skyline High School but was not a direct student of Beam’s, adding another layer of complexity to this senseless act of violence.

Community in Mourning

Public figures like Congresswoman Barbara Lee and sports commentator Monte Poole have expressed their grief, highlighting Beam’s immeasurable contribution to Oakland. His family’s statement powerfully captures the magnitude of this loss: a dedicated mentor who uplifted others through education and athletics has been taken far too soon.

In a cruel twist of irony, Beam was shot during a visit from Skyline High School students – just a day after another shooting at their school. The Oakland community is left stunned, grieving a true local hero whose impact transcended the football field.
