Police Accountability Protest Seattle

California’s politicians are dropping some serious transparency heat on law enforcement, and we’re here for it.

State Senators Scott Wiener and Jesse Arreguin have introduced the No Secret Police Act, a bold legislative move that would prevent law enforcement from playing hide and seek during operations. The bill aims to stop federal agents from rolling up looking like mysterious ninja operatives without identification.

No More Anonymity

Under this proposed legislation, cops would be required to display their names or identifiers while on duty. The message is clear: if you’re enforcing the law, the public deserves to know exactly who you are.

Exemptions to the Rule

Before you think this is a total mask ban, there are some exceptions. SWAT teams, medical masks, and firefighting-related emergency masks would still be allowed. So, don’t worry - your friendly neighborhood tactical unit won’t be completely exposed.

Why This Matters

Wiener was blunt about the motivation: “The recent federal operations in California have created an environment of profound terror. If we want the public to trust law enforcement, we cannot allow them to behave like secret police in an authoritarian state”. Preach, Senator.

Violating this potential law would be a misdemeanor, sending a clear message that transparency isn’t just a suggestion - it’s a requirement.
