The Bay Area’s housing crisis just got another brutal chapter, and it’s playing out in San Jose’s Columbus Park, where city officials are about to drop the hammer on another homeless encampment.

The Sweep Shuffle

Imagine losing your home, then being told you have to move… again. That’s the reality for over 80 unhoused residents living in vehicles and tents at Columbus Park. The city claims the area has become “unsafe,” but let’s be real – their solution looks more like displacement than compassion.

Who Wins Here?

While the city dreams of transforming the park into a shiny new playground with soccer fields and pickleball courts, real human beings are left wondering where they’ll sleep tonight. Gabrielle Aguirre, a 42-year-old resident, puts it bluntly: “It’s really depressing. We’re just trying to get back on our feet”.

The Harsh Numbers

San Jose claims they’re adding 1,400 shelter beds this year, but that’s a drop in the bucket for the approximately 5,500 unhoused residents. Todd Langton from Agape Silicon Valley doesn’t mince words, calling out Mayor Matt Mahan for spreading misinformation about shelter availability.

Bottom line: This isn’t just about clearing a park. It’s about human dignity, systemic failure, and a city that seems more interested in aesthetics than actual solutions.
