Trump's War on Bilingual Education: WTF is Happening to Our Classrooms?

Imagine working your butt off to create groundbreaking resources for students learning English, only to have it all ripped away by political nonsense. That’s exactly what’s happening in the education world right now.
The Funding Bloodbath
The Trump administration is proposing to completely eliminate federal funding for English learners and immigrant students, claiming it “deemphasizes English primacy”. Spoiler alert: This is NOT a good look. Education leaders are calling bullshit, arguing that these cuts would straight-up violate civil rights laws.
What’s Really at Stake
In Los Angeles County alone, schools receive around $30 million in Title III funding. These dollars aren’t just numbers - they’re lifelines for tutoring, support staff, and materials that help immigrant and English-learning students succeed. By cutting these funds, we’re essentially telling these students: “Your education doesn’t matter”.
The Bigger Picture
Researchers and educators are crystal clear: bilingual education works. Decades of research show that dual-language programs are the most effective way for students to learn English and achieve academic success. But apparently, the Trump administration didn’t get that memo.
As Nicole Knight from Oakland Unified School District put it, cutting these supports “jeopardizes the quality of education for all students”. And she’s not wrong. We’re talking about potentially erasing years of progress in supporting our most vulnerable students.
