When life hands you dyslexia, turn it into your superpower. That’s exactly what Golden State Warriors’ Gary Payton II is doing with his groundbreaking Elite Youth Basketball Camp in Oakland.
Breaking Barriers, Building Champions
In a world where learning differences are often seen as obstacles, Payton II is flipping the script. His annual camp isn’t just about slam dunks and jump shots, it’s a mission to empower kids with dyslexia, showing them that neurodiversity isn’t a limitation, it’s a strength.
From Personal Journey to Public Inspiration
Drawing from his own experiences, Payton II knows firsthand how challenging dyslexia can be. Encouraged by his uncle and supported by his family’s foundation, he’s transforming personal struggles into a platform for transformation. The camp provides 75 free scholarships and even funds comprehensive dyslexia evaluations that can cost up to $10,000.
Superpowers, Not Setbacks
“We see things different, we hear things different,” Payton II explains. “Once you figure out how to break it down and use your superpowers, you become a superhero”. With the camp’s focus on building confidence, peer connections, and skill development, these young athletes are learning that their brains are their greatest asset.
Statistics show dyslexia impacts 20 percent of the population, representing 80-90 percent of learning disabilities. But in Payton II’s world, those numbers aren’t about limitations, they’re about potential.
