In a thrilling showdown, Saint Mary’s Gaels orchestrated a sensational comeback to edge out the Vanderbilt Commodores 59-56 in the first round of March Madness this past Friday. Yes, folks, miracles do happen! When it looked like the Gaels were going to crumble under the pressure, Jordan Ross emerged as the unsung hero, putting on a scoring clinic just when they needed it most.
Augustas Marciulionis, a two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year, found himself shackled to the bench with foul trouble, prompting panic among fans. But Ross, stepping boldly into the spotlight, netted 10 of his 15 points while Marciulionis was cooling his heels. Talk about pressure on his shoulders!
“He’s kind of funny,” coach Randy Bennett quipped about Ross. “He knows when he has to go, and he knew he had to go”. Because, clearly, who doesn’t love a player who can charm their way through chaos?
Despite the panic surrounding Marciulionis’ absence, the Gaels regrouped and rallied in the second half. Unlike last year’s flaming disaster against Grand Canyon, this time they proved they could withstand a 12-point deficit. Their defense tightened, and suddenly, Vanderbilt’s shots were about as reliable as a flip phone in 2023.
With the tide turning, Marciulionis finally returned to the fray, hitting crucial clutch shots that led to an impending face-off with No. 2 seed Alabama. Let’s hope this clash of styles, Alabama’s high-flying offense and Saint Mary’s stone-cold defense, will be as exhilarating as watching a cat chase a laser pointer.
As for Vanderbilt, they had a chance to grab a victory for the first time in 13 years, but all it took was a few missed shots and some serious body blows from our Gaels to sink their hopes. Coach Mark Byington lamented the missed opportunities, saying, “We missed some shots around the rim… it was a lot of things there”. Not the most inspiring PEP talk, but hey, it’s the truth.
Looking ahead, the Gaels are aiming to crash the Sweet 16 party for the first time since 2010. If they can vanquish Alabama, they’ll have the pride of a lion, and the hype of March Madness, on their side. Get ready, because this tournament’s just beginning, and the Gaels have shown they know how to keep it exciting!
