AI Just Stole Darth Vader's Voice and Hollywood's Losing Its Mind 😱

As Kuromon Market in Osaka was about to close for the evening I sampled some delicious king crab and did a final lap of the market when I stumbled upon one of the most Japanese scenes I could possibly imagine, a little girl, making friends with a robot.

Tech and entertainment worlds are colliding in an epic showdown that would make even Darth Vader raise an eyebrow. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) is throwing down the gauntlet against Epic Games’ Fortnite over their cheeky AI recreation of the legendary Darth Vader voice.

The drama centers around James Earl Jones’ iconic voice, which Epic has digitally replicated after the actor signed over his voice rights before his death in 2024. While this might sound like sci-fi magic, voice actors are seeing red – and not the lightsaber kind.

The AI Voice Uprising

Over 54 voice actors have historically stepped in to portray Vader when Jones wasn’t available, and now they’re facing potential obsolescence thanks to artificial intelligence. SAG-AFTRA isn’t just sitting back; they’ve filed a labor complaint arguing that Epic unilaterally changed employment terms by using AI voices without proper negotiation.

The Strike Continues

This battle is part of a larger war. The union’s interactive media strike, which began in July 2024, continues to challenge video game producers over AI protections. More than 100 games have signed interim agreements, but major publishers like Epic remain in a standoff.

What This Means for Creatives

The Fortnite Vader voice incident isn’t just about one character – it’s a watershed moment for creative professionals everywhere. As AI technology advances, artists, voice actors, and performers are rightfully asking: will human creativity become obsolete?
