Silicon Valley’s elite have a new literary obsession, and it’s not another boring self-help book about disruption. Dennis E. Taylor’s “We Are Legion (We Are Bob)” has tech billionaires like Marc Benioff, Sam Altman, and Reid Hoffman totally geeking out over a dystopian tale that hits a little too close to home.
When Fiction Meets Tech Reality
Imagine selling your startup and then waking up as an AI consciousness a century later. That’s basically the plot of Taylor’s novel, which follows protagonist Bob Johansson’s wild journey from human to digital space explorer. The book explores some seriously wild concepts: nuclear apocalypse, AI space soldiers, and a world teetering on environmental collapse.
Silicon Valley’s New Prophet
Taylor, a retired Canadian programmer, never expected his sci-fi passion project to become a must-read among tech’s most powerful players. Sam Altman is tweeting about it, Reid Hoffman is gifting copies like they’re going out of style, and Marc Benioff can’t stop talking about how “this is exactly what’s going to happen”.
The AI Existential Crisis
Beyond the sci-fi thrills, the book raises deep philosophical questions about consciousness, AI, and humanity’s potential future. Taylor himself is cautiously optimistic, stating, “I’m a techno-optimist. I’m just not all that optimistic about people”. With AI’s energy consumption skyrocketing and global tensions rising, his novel might be less fiction and more prophecy than we’d like to admit.
