Did Your Coffee Just Spill? Two Earthquakes Rumble in the East Bay!

DUBLIN, Monday night was just another cozy evening in the Bay Area until Mother Nature decided to pull off a raucous surprise party. Two earthquakes shook the East Bay, and not in the cute, swaying-trees kind of way.
The first quake, registered at a rattling magnitude of 3.9, hit at 7:46 p.m., roughly 2.9 miles west-northwest of Dublin. Just when you thought you could go about your life uninhibited, another tremble graced our presence at 8:19 p.m., a smaller 2.9 quake southeast of Pleasant Hill. The universe clearly had other plans for our Monday night Netflix binges.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) blames the first quake for promoting a spunky downgrading from an initial 4.2 to 4.0, and then finally settling on a 3.9 rating. Talk about mixed messages!
Not to worry, though, no immediate reports of injuries or damage came flooding in. We can all let out a collective sigh of relief (and perhaps chastise that single mug of coffee that decided to get a little too adventurous).
BART had its own hitch in this tale, with trains slowing down as a precautionary measure while the tracks were inspected for any damage. This, of course, resulted in up to 20-minute delays across the system. So if your commute felt like it took an eternity, blame it on the quakes, not the usual suspects of lack of sleep or bad planning. Normal service resumed by 8:50 p.m., just in time for those late-night commuters trying to hop back into their routine.
The tremors were felt in various parts of the state, with reports of swaying cups as far away as Modesto, Monterey, and even the Sierra Nevada foothills. Who knew we’d be sharing a ‘shaky’ experience with so many?
As we continue to shake off the annoyance of these quakes, here’s hoping the next time someone decides to get our attention, it’s not through an earthquake but rather a simple text inviting us to happy hour. Now that’s a rumble we can get behind!
