Picture this: a laid-back Sausalito bar in the 1970s, where a simple cocktail would become a rock ‘n’ roll icon. Bobby Lozoff, a bartender with an unexpected claim to fame, just changed the drinking game forever.
The year was 1972, and the Rolling Stones were about to walk into the Trident restaurant. Little did anyone know that a chance encounter between Mick Jagger and Lozoff would birth a cocktail that would define an entire era. When Jagger asked for a margarita, Lozoff casually suggested a tequila sunrise - and history was made.
A Cocktail That Rocked the World
The tequila sunrise wasn’t just a drink; it became a cultural phenomenon. From Jose Cuervo’s special edition Rolling Stones line to the Eagles’ epic song, this cocktail transcended the bar scene. Keith Richards even dubbed their 1972 tour the “cocaine and tequila sunrise tour” - talk about rock ‘n’ roll excess!
Beyond the Bar
Lozoff was more than just a bartender. After leaving Sausalito in 1976, he reinvented himself multiple times - from opening a nightclub in Hawaii to teaching computer classes at a senior center. His legacy wasn’t something he particularly cared about, which ironically made him even more legendary.
A Lasting Legacy
In 2024, the Marin History Museum placed a historical marker at the Trident restaurant, commemorating Lozoff and his cocktail co-creator Billy Rice. Though Lozoff couldn’t attend the ceremony, his impact was immortalized forever. As he once said, “I have a million stories about the Trident. It was a fun time, and I have no regrets”.
Cheers to Bobby Lozoff - the bartender who accidentally became a rock ‘n’ roll icon.
