Get Ready, SF! A Massive Nude Goddess is Taking Over Embarcadero Plaza!

R-Evolution by Marco Cochrane, Burning Man 2015

San Francisco has a new resident, and she’s quite a sight! The much-anticipated, ginormous 45-foot-tall statue of a nude woman, titled R-Evolution, is finally finding a home at Embarcadero Plaza after facing rejection from her first choice, Union Square. Fashion faux pas? Maybe. But here in the Bay Area, we don’t shy away from showcasing art, no matter how much it makes conservative heads spin.

Originally slated to grace Union Square, the voluptuous figure turned out to be a bit too hefty for the historical tiles. We’re talking about a 16,000-pound structure! News flash: Tile flooring and boulders don’t mix. But fear not, art lovers! R-Evolution, sculpted by Marco Cochrane, a seasoned artist with a penchant for bold statements, is snagging a new gig at the more sturdy Embarcadero. Set for an unveiling on April 11, this figure is set to draw attention (and perhaps a few giggles) as it stands tall, literally!

For those unfamiliar, Cochrane’s work was last seen at Burning Man in 2015 and on the Las Vegas Strip. Clearly, this isn’t Cochrane’s first rendezvous with monumental nudity, or our first encounter with it. The statue, modeled after Deja Solis when she was in her 20s, certainly has an empowering narrative stitched into its fibers. Fun fact: Deja is now 45, proof that age is just a number when you’re a towering work of art.

The unveiling festivities promise a delightful mix of art and community. Kicking off at 5 p.m., there will be an artist’s market followed by remarks from Cochrane himself and music spun by the illustrious Opulent Temple crew. Did someone say bar? Yes, please! And a bonus: the first 200 attendees will snag a free artist poster.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. The statue, while initially scheduled to stay for six months, could end up gracing Embarcadero for a year. So, whether you want to admire the art or just check out the scene, mark your calendars! This statue isn’t just a representation of femininity; it’s a celebration of boldness in the heart of one of the most progressive cities in the world. So, bring your friends and your camera because this is one unveiling you’ll not want to miss!
