Heads up, music lovers and San Francisco history buffs! The Excelsior District is about to get a whole lot more groovy.

The city has officially approved renaming Harrington Street to “Jerry Garcia Street,” transforming a humble one-block stretch into a tribute to the legendary Grateful Dead guitarist who called this neighborhood home during his childhood.

A Musical Legacy Born

Jerry Garcia’s journey from this unassuming street to becoming a rock and roll icon is pure San Francisco magic. After losing his father at a young age, Garcia moved in with his grandparents on this very block, attending nearby Monroe Elementary School and laying the groundwork for his future musical revolution.

From Local Streets to Global Stages

After a brief and unsuccessful stint in the Army, Garcia returned to San Francisco and formed the band that would become the Grateful Dead. The street that witnessed his early years is now getting the recognition it deserves, thanks to District Supervisor Chyanne Chen’s proposal.

More Than Just a Street Name

Interestingly, Garcia himself published a memoir titled “Harrington Street” about his childhood, making this street renaming feel like a deeply personal tribute. With the annual Jerry Day concert coming up on August 2nd and the nearby Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, the Excelsior District continues to celebrate one of its most famous sons.

San Francisco, you never disappoint in keeping music history alive and vibrant!
