Oakland Teachers Drop a Middle Finger to ICE in Epic Community Showdown

West Oakland just showed the world what community solidarity looks like, and spoiler alert: it’s fierce.

When Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents decided to play neighborhood patrol near Hoover Elementary School and Harriet Tubman Preschool, local teachers and community members weren’t having it. Between 9 and 9:30 a.m., schools went into lockdown mode, but that didn’t mean surrender.

Community Power in Action

Instead of cowering, dozens of Oakland educators and residents swarmed the sidewalks around the school campus, creating a human barrier against potential immigration enforcement. Olivia Udovic, a kindergarten teacher, summed it up perfectly: “Oakland in hard times comes together and supports our neighbors”.

Political Clap Back

City Councilmember Carroll Fife didn’t mince words, delivering a mic-drop worthy message: “Hands off Oakland. Get the f, out of Oakland”. Her blunt statement echoed the city’s unwavering commitment to protecting its immigrant community.

Solidarity Wins

The community’s rapid response might have actually worked. Vilma Serrano, another teacher, noted that a suspected ICE vehicle circling the area seemed discouraged by the massive community presence. Mayor Barbara Lee reinforced the message, declaring, “You are not alone, and we will not be intimidated”.

This isn’t just about a school lockdown - it’s a testament to Oakland’s radical spirit of resistance and collective care. When fascism tries to knock, Oakland answers with solidarity.
