California’s wildfire crisis isn’t just burning forests, it’s scorching political tensions between state and federal leadership. Governor Gavin Newsom is once again stepping into the ring, calling out the feds for their lackluster approach to forest management and fire prevention.

The Fire Under Newsom’s Feet

With 57% of California’s forestlands owned by the federal government, Newsom isn’t holding back. He’s demanding a dollar-for-dollar match in wildfire prevention funding, dubbing his cheeky campaign “Make America Rake Again”, a snarky nod to former President Trump’s infamous forest floor comment.

Big Money, Bigger Problems

California isn’t playing around. The state has set aside a jaw-dropping $4 billion for wildfire protection in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, compared to the federal government’s $7 billion spread across 238 million nationwide acres. These aren’t just numbers, they’re life-and-property-saving investments.

Prevention is the Real MVP

According to Cal Fire’s Anale Burlew, more than 3,200 wildfires have sparked this year, but you probably haven’t heard about most of them. Why? Because prevention strategies are working overtime. “Keep these fires small,” Burlew emphasizes. “Don’t let them be newsworthy”.

Newsom’s message is crystal clear: collaborative, proactive fire management isn’t just a state responsibility, it’s a nationwide imperative.
