Just when you thought the Bay Area’s food scene couldn’t get any more chaotic, another beloved local business bites the dust.
Le Marais Bakery’s adorable Grande Creperie, which has been serving up delectable Brittany-style crepes at the Ferry Building, is about to get the corporate boot. Owners Patrick and Joanna Ascaso revealed the shocking news on Instagram, claiming they were unexpectedly told their lease wouldn’t be renewed after investing their personal savings into renovating the space during the pandemic.
A Sudden and Unexpected Goodbye
Apparently, Ferry Building management claims the lease was always “short-term” and that Grande Creperie no longer fits their mysterious “cultural mix”. This corporate speak is giving major gentrification vibes, folks. The bakery, which had lines out the door and was supposedly promised a “longstanding” tenancy, is now being shown the exit by June 30th.
The Corporate Shuffle
Jane Connors, the general manager, stated they want to make the marketplace “more accessible in the evenings” - because apparently, daytime crepe magic doesn’t cut it anymore. The owners are understandably confused and frustrated, having transformed an empty pandemic-era space into a community hotspot.
A Bay Area Culinary Casualty
While Le Marais still maintains multiple locations around the Bay Area, this Ferry Building closure feels like another punch to our local food ecosystem. Another day, another small business sacrificed on the altar of corporate real estate reshuffling. Stay sassy, San Francisco - and support your local eateries before they disappear.
