Political Drama Unfolds: Chinese American Club Drops the Political Mic on SF Supervisor

Nancy Tung with Supporter Joel Engardio

Politics in San Francisco just got spicier than a Mission District street food truck. The Chinese American Democratic Club just served Supervisor Joel Engardio a massive political burn by overwhelmingly voting to support his recall. 🔥

In a dramatic showdown that could rival any Netflix political drama, 52 out of 55 club members basically said “bye, Felicia” to Engardio over his controversial Great Highway closure plan. Club president Josephine Zhao wasn’t playing around, emphasizing they didn’t make this decision lightly.

The Great Highway Showdown

The beef? Engardio co-sponsored a ballot measure closing part of the Great Highway to cars, which apparently didn’t sit well with the local community. The club, known for its political muscle, has previously flexed its recall power by ousting Board of Education members and District Attorney Chesa Boudin.

Political Consequences

Former club president Brian Quan warned that this vote would have serious political ripple effects. Some members even considered it potential “political suicide” given Engardio’s connections with powerful political allies like state Senator Scott Wiener.

The Community Speaks

Sean Kim, a Richmond District resident, summed it up perfectly: “We have been ignored”. The overwhelming vote suggests the community is ready to make some noise and demand accountability.

While the “Stand with Joel” campaign claims many Chinese residents support Engardio, the club’s decisive vote tells a different story. One thing’s certain: San Francisco politics never disappoints in the drama department. 🍿
