Silicon Valley’s political drama just got spicier than a Mission District burrito! 🌶️

Anthony Becker, the former Santa Clara city councilmember who thought he could play games with the legal system, just dodged a major bullet. After being convicted of perjury for leaking a grand jury report to the 49ers brass, Becker narrowly escaped jail time and instead scored a sweet 40-day county work program vacation. Talk about privilege, right?

The 49ers Connection

For years, Santa Clara politics has been a playground for 49ers CEO Jed York, with local politicians essentially being sorted into two camps: York’s loyal minions and those brave souls trying to keep corporate shenanigans in check. Becker? He was firmly in Team Jed.

A Political Rollercoaster

In a twist that sounds more like a Netflix drama than local politics, Becker nearly beat current Mayor Lisa Gillmor in the 2022 election, losing by fewer than 800 votes. Now, instead of sitting in a council chamber, he’ll be picking up trash along Santa Clara highways - probably wearing a jumpsuit that’s about as flattering as his political career.

Judge Javier Alcala summed it up perfectly: “I do think there should be some form of punishment beyond you losing your job”. Mic drop. 🎤

So Bay Area, the next time you see someone in a county work program picking up trash, give a little wave - it might just be our favorite perjury-committing ex-councilmember getting a taste of civic service!

Disclaimer: Justice served, Bay Area style.
