It was supposed to be a day of pure jubilation for Liverpool soccer fans. A record-tying Premier League championship, thousands packed in the streets, and an open-top bus parade celebrating their team’s epic victory. Instead, chaos and horror erupted when a 53-year-old man drove a minivan directly into the celebrating crowd.
A Joyful Parade Turns Tragic
Witnesses described a scene of absolute terror as the van plowed through the sea of red-clad fans, tossing bodies into the air and pushing people along the street. Harry Rashid, who was present with his family, recounted the horrifying moment: “Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people being knocked off the bonnet of a car”.
The Aftermath
The incident left 45 people injured, with four critically hospitalized. Merseyside Police quickly arrested the driver and emphasized that the event was not terrorism-related. Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram was quick to address potential social media misinformation, calling online platforms “a cesspit” designed to divide and inflame.
Community Resilience
Prime Minister Keir Starmer captured the city’s spirit, stating, “Scenes of joy turned to utter horror and devastation. Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool”. The community’s response highlighted the incredible solidarity of Liverpool fans in the face of tragedy.
