When xenophobic rhetoric threatens to tear families apart, Bay Area activists aren’t just sitting back and taking it. They’re hitting the streets, marching 20 miles across multiple cities, and sending a crystal-clear message: immigrants are welcome here.
The Trump administration’s relentless attacks on undocumented immigrants have sparked a massive resistance movement. From San Mateo to San Francisco, communities are mobilizing to protect their neighbors, friends, and family members who came seeking a better life.
A Legacy of Solidarity
San Francisco’s sanctuary city roots run deep. Since 1985, the city has consistently fought federal attempts to criminalize and deport immigrants, successfully challenging multiple executive orders that would strip funding and tear communities apart.
Fighting Historical Injustice
Many of these immigrants aren’t just seeking opportunity - they’re fleeing the consequences of U.S. foreign policy. Decades of American intervention in Central America destabilized entire countries, creating the very conditions that forced people to migrate.
Know Your Rights
Local organizations are empowering immigrant communities with critical information. “Know your rights” campaigns distribute red cards explaining civil liberties, ensuring people understand how to protect themselves when confronted by ICE agents.
As community organizer Roberto Hernandez put it, the “American dream is becoming the American nightmare” - but the Bay Area is fighting back, one protest, one solidarity action at a time.
